Common Antibiotics and Dosing for Children:

Amoxicillin

Indications: Respiratory infections, ear infections, and streptococcal pharyngitis


Dose:

Mild to moderate infections: 20–40 mg/kg/day, divided into 2-3 doses


Severe infections: 40–90 mg/kg/day, divided into 2 doses


Maximum daily dose: 4,000 mg/day


Azithromycin

Indications: Upper respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, and skin infections


Dose:

10 mg/kg/day on Day 1, followed by 5 mg/kg/day for the next 4 days


Maximum daily dose: 500 mg on Day 1, 250 mg thereafter


Cefuroxime

Indications: Ear infections, pneumonia, sinusitis


Dose: 20–30 mg/kg/day, divided into 2 doses


Maximum daily dose: 1,000 mg/day


Ceftriaxone

Indications: Severe infections (e.g., meningitis, pneumonia)


Dose: 50–100 mg/kg/day as a single dose or divided into 2 doses


Maximum daily dose: 2,000 mg/day


Clindamycin

Indications: Bone/joint infections, skin infections


Dose: 10–30 mg/kg/day, divided into 3–4 doses


Maximum daily dose: 1,800 mg/day


Metronidazole

Indications: Anaerobic infections, parasitic infections


Dose: 7.5 mg/kg/dose, every 8 hours


Maximum daily dose: 2,000 mg/day


Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX)

Indications: UTIs, skin infections


Dose: TMP 6–12 mg/kg/day, divided into 2 doses (corresponds to SMX 30–60 mg/kg/day)


Maximum daily dose: TMP 320 mg/day


General Tips for Pediatric Antibiotic Dosing:

Weight-Based Dosing: Always calculate based on the child's weight in kilograms. (1 kg = 2.2 lbs).


Accurate Measurement: Use calibrated syringes or medicine cups for liquid formulations.


Duration: Follow the full prescribed course to avoid resistance.
