Drugs containing resin


Resins: are solid or semisolid amorphous organic subcomplex chemical nature as acid, ester, alcohols or gstances of lycosidic compounds…..etc., and they are free from nitrogen.
Resin and resin combinations
1.   Oleo-resins e.g.
2.   Gum-resin e.g. gum Arabic and gum tragacanth.
3.   Oleo-gum-resin e.g. Myrrh and Olibanum.
4.   Balsam e.g. benzoin, balsam peru and balsam tolu.
Colophony
Origin: it is the residue (resin) left after distillation of the oil of turpentine from the crude oleo-resin of various species of Pinus        
                     Fam. Pinaceae.
Uses:
1.   As an ingredient of ointments and plasters.
2.   The resulted volatile oil “Turpentine oil” is used as counter irritant.
3.   Varnish, paint, printing inks and floor covering.
Test for identity:
1.   Solution is acidic to litmus paper due to the presence of high percentages of acids.
2.   Dissolve about 0.1g of powdered resin in 10ml of acetic anhydride, add 1drop of conc. H2SO4, a bright purplish-red colour is produced, which rapidly changes to violet.
3.   Shake a little powdered colophony with petroleum and filter. Shake the solution with twice its volume of dilute solution of copper acetate. The petroleum layer becomes bluish-green colour.
