9. Uva Ursi leaves



origin: the dried leaves of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi   Bot.
F: Ericaceae 

Active constituent:

1.     Hydroquinone derivatives (arbutin).
2.     Tannins (gallotannin)
Key element (microscopically examination):
1.     actincytic stomata(about 9cells around the stomata)present only in the lower surface.
Uses:
1.     Antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory for infection of genitor-urinary tract.
2.     Diuretic
3.     Used as whitening agent for the skin in cases of hyperpigmentation disorders (tyrosinase enzyme impairment of melanin synthesis).
Test for identified:                                                                                                
1.     Test for arbutin (sublimation test):                                                   place 0.1g of powdered leaf in a small crucible, moisten with dilute Hcl,cover the crucible with a microscopic slide, and heat gently formed a long rod crystal of hydroquinone + dilute sol. Of NH4OH a sol. Become gradually dark brown.
Report in the lab.
