Peru balsam

Origin: it is the balsam obtained from the scorched and wounded trunks of Myroxylon pereirae
                    F: Leguminosae
Active constituents:
1.   Resin esters (peruresinotannol combined with cinnamic and benzoic acid.
2.   Esters of balsamic acids (60% benzyl benzoate and benzyl cinnamate).
3.   Traces of
free cinnamic acid and vanillin.
Uses:
Internally:
1.   Expectorant in cough.
2.   Bronchitis.
3.   Common cold.
Externally:
1.   Hemorrhoids.
2.   Chronic ulcers and badly healing wounds.
3.   Bed sores with castor oil.
4.   Scabies.
5.   Eczema and pruritus.
6.   Non adhesive dressing.
Test for identity:
1.   Warm 0.5g powder with KMnO4 give negative result.
2.   Alcoholic solution with alcoholic solution of FeCl3 green colour due to peruresinitannol.
3.   Sublimation test: give negative result.
